HACA welcomes gardeners and conservationists, with or without allotments, interested in growing food crops. The Association promotes the vital links between cultivcation, biodiversity and sustainability. The 20 allotment plots and a conservation area are rented from Hindon Parish Council. (To rent a plot, apply to the Parish Clerk).
HACA manages the conservation area, much of which is a wildflower-rich meadow attracting many insects, notably more than 20 butterfly species, songbirds, small mammals, slow-worms and common lizards. The meadow has a fine show of cowslips in spring, followed through the summer by orchids and a wide range of colourful dry grassland wildflowers. The adjacent bramble patch is also popular for blackberrying!
HACA runs a range of activities throughout the year, open to all: for example seed and plant swaps, informal outdoor workshops on weeds or other topics of interest, and in August the Big Mow of the wildflower meadow. We plan to set up information boards and develop a programme of nature visits and walks on and around the site.
The allotments comprise both private food plots and a village amenity and open space, and visitors are most welcome, especially to the wildflower meadow.
